With extended singledom (still) on the rise, young women are opting for “sologamy” (a.k.a. self marriage) as they embrace relationships with themselves.

With extended singledom (still) on the rise, young women are opting for “sologamy” (a.k.a. self marriage) as they embrace relationships with themselves. YPulse’s dating and relationships research found that 34% of Gen Z and Millennials say they don’t ever want to get married (up from 26% in 2021), and the top two reasons they’re single is because they want to focus on themselves and they like being on their own. The pandemic certainly accelerated the embrace of singledom as many spent more time focused on their self-development rather than romantic relationships. Now, some are opting for “sologamy” over monogamy, complete with wedding celebrations to make tying the knot with themselves official. Celebrities have been embracing the solo lifestyle, too: in 2017, Victoria’s Secret model Adriana Lima posted on Instagram that she wears a diamond ring on her left finger because it symbolizes that she is “committed to [herself] and [her] own happiness,” while Emma Watson has declared that she is “self-partnered.” As one 32-year-old sologamist puts it, “[Sologamy] is my way of rebelling against traditional relationship norms that I don’t agree with.” (Insider)
