Alibaba introduced a virtual influencer to hype up the Winter Olympics.

Feb 11 2022

Alibaba introduced a virtual influencer to hype up the Winter Olympics. The tech company worked with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to introduce Dong Dong—which means Winter in Chinese—a 22-year-old female virtual influencer designed to hype up younger audiences and promote merchandise for the Winter Games. Dong Dong’s promotions will lead fans to the official Winter Olympics shop on Alibaba’s ecommerce platform, Tmall. Live-streamed shows where Dong Dong will respond to fan questions via gestures and facial expressions will also be available—oh, and she can dance along to Olympic theme songs, too. The virtual influencer is based on cloud technology, and the personality was designed by Alibaba Group’s research division. As virtual influencers continue to take off, Alibaba’s CMO notes that these technology-based personalities could offer sports fans “a unique experience.” (AdweekThe Drum)
