TikTok is the new Craigslist Missed Connections. Rewind to earlier days of the internet, Craigslist’s Missed Connections section was a place where people could, in theory, track down long-lost lovers / strangers they once had a fleeting, romantic moment with (a.k.a. missed connections). In 2022 that area of the internet still exists—on TikTok that is. #MissedConnections, #FindHer, and #FindHim count between 20 to 380 million views, and they’re each filled with videos from young people who are leaving it up to the TikTok algorithm to help them find their missed connections. For example, 22-year-old Marielle Kinney describes her unexpected meet-cute in a video: “Last night I was skating on campus at UC Berkeley and this really cute pink-haired girl yelled ‘do you listen to girl in red?’” (a phrase that has become a popular way to ask someone if they’re queer). Her video counts nearly 40K views, and she’s had some luck: one person commented, “I live in Berkeley so you’re close!” while others read, “just sent this to my Cal group chat” and “commenting for the algorithm.” YPulse’s Clicking on Community trend research shows that outside of family and friends, young people say they find their sense of community on a social media platform, and however fleeting the missed connections “section” of TikTok may be, it’s clearly helping some navigate their love lives.
