Circus artists are finding a new audience on TikTok. Just about any side hustle, hobby, fandom, and art form can go viral on TikTok these days—as long as you have a talent / niche, you’re bound to find an audience. One community that has been thriving on the app are circus performers: #circus counts more than 4B views while circus performer @jacqueszewhipper, clown @rafaelgarcez, acrobat @marcospl11, and aerialist family @the_mcfive_circus have earned millions of followers for sharing their performances / talent. While circuses thrived in the 19th and early 20th century, over time they’ve become less relevant, both as the public called out the broken roots of the industry and other forms of entertainment took off. Now, circus performers on TikTok are working to break the stigma by talking about how the craft has evolved, while giving viewers a deeper look into their behind the scenes work. YPulse’s Social Media Deep Dive research found that entertaining content, combating boredom, and mood boosts are the top reasons TikTok users visit the app, and this type of art form is thriving as it gives consumers a new way to enjoy live entertainment when seeing shows in person aren’t as accessible.
