Love Beauty and Planet is encouraging consumers to finish their holiday shopping by December 4. In an effort to avoid the environmental impact that comes with rush shipping, Love Beauty and Planet is asking consumers to sign a “Plan It for the Planet” pledge, committing to ending their holiday shopping by December 4—a week before retailers begin rush shipping products for the holidays. On average, rush shipping produces nearly 40% more carbon emissions than ground shipping according to Dr. Josué C. Velázquez Martínez, director of the sustainable logistics initiative at MIT. For every use of the tag #PlanItforthePlanet, the brand will donate $19.99 (the average cost of rush shipping) to the National Forest Foundation until it reaches $150,000 in donations, equalling the planting of 150,000 trees in the U.S. YPulse’s 2021 holiday shopping research shows that young holiday shoppers were far more likely to start their shopping in October compared to previous years, so they could wrap up their gift buying in time for December 4. While the pandemic has caused supply chain issues across industries—an August Gallup poll found that 60% of U.S. adults say they were unable to get a product they wanted between June and July due to shortages—Love Beauty and Planet is encouraging everyone to shop more sustainably this holiday to not only ease the supply chain but protect the environment as well.
