DirectTV created a comic book series with Serena Williams starring as Wonder Woman. As young consumers call for iconic roles to be recast with BIPOC leads, DirectTV took a different approach by having one of Gen Z and Millennials’ favorite pro athletes Serena Williams star as DC superhero Wonder Woman in a campaign promoting the launch of DirectTV Stream. The four-chapter comic Serving Up Justice, which will be released digitally and have a follow-up print edition in November, was written by Amanda Deibert and illustrated by Cat Staggs, and features Wondrous Serena fighting “ball-launching robots” who invaded the grand slam tournament. The campaign rollout includes social media activations like a Twitter emoji of Wondrous Serena holding a golden tennis racket and a Snapchat AR Portal. The feature lets users replicate the comic book experience by entering the AR portal via posters designed by DC Comic artists, and will allow them to step into a “brightly colored ‘80s inspired world” and play an interactive game to help the tennis star defeat the Retrobots.
