Urban Outfitters is launching its own thrift store marketplace to engage with young shoppers. To compete with online resellers like Poshmark and thredUP, Urban Outfitters created Nuuly Thrift, its own secondhand marketplace launching as an iPhone app this fall. The retailer’s goal is to provide a fast fashion alternative to Gen Z and Millennial shoppers, while also giving them a place to sell their clothing: “We know that if we don’t provide the platform it’s not going to keep sellers from selling on other platforms. These secondhand experiences are happening whether we’re playing in them or not,” says David Hayne, president of Nuuly Thrift and chief technology officer for Urban Outfitters. Nuuly Thrift plans to stand out from other online thrift stores by offering a curated experience where consumers can shop trending styles. YPulse’s sustainability research shows that 49% of 13-39-year-olds have purchased secondhand clothing and accessories, and 27% are interested in purchasing secondhand clothing. (WSJ)
