Cartoon Network is producing its first African superhero series. Created by Nigerian animator Ridwan Moshood, Garbage Boy and Trash Can follows a boy with imaginary superpowers fighting for justice with his sidekick. Director of The Fairly OddParents has teamed up with Moshood as supervising director for the series, which is currently being produced at South African studio Pure Garbage. The series won Cartoon Network’s Africa inaugural Creative Lab competition, which provides new opportunities to African creators. YPulse’s Representation in Action trend data shows that 50% of BIPOC parents want their child’s race/ethnicity reflected in the media they consume, and Garbage Boy and Trash Can is another program paving the way for more diverse kids content.
