Gen Z are getting into “side hustles” during the pandemic. During COVID, Gen Z’s future careers and finances have been especially impacted. According to research from the IMF, those who start their careers during a recession are more likely to see lower earnings for 10 to 15 years after graduation. Now Gen Z has been creating side hustles in quarantines: Videos all over TikTok and Instagram show how teens are making money, whether it’s through customized clothing, dog walking, or offering business services like copy writing or bookkeeping. Online marketplaces like Etsy, Depop, and Fiverr have made it easy for users to sell products or find freelance work easier. An Upwork survey reported that in June and July of last year, 44% of Millennial freelancers and 36% of Gen Z freelancers started during the pandemic. YPulse’s Life Plans, Rewritten trend report found that 13% of Gen Z say they have a part-time job, and over half say the pandemic has made them reassess their career goals. (Bloomberg)
