Wattpad wants to turn young users’ fanfiction stories into teen movie hits.

Jan 15 2021

Wattpad wants to turn young users’ fanfiction stories into teen movie hits. Since 2006, young writers have been publishing their original work and fanfiction on free-to-use platform Wattpad. With more than 90 million monthly users, nearly one billion stories published, and 22 billion minutes read per month, the company (who is sitting on “a treasure trove of IP just waiting to be adapted”) has launched Wattpad Studios in hopes of becoming the next Blumhouse or “A24 of teen dramas.” Netflix’s The Kissing Booth and After and Hulu’s Light as a Feather were all content that came from Wattpad authors. To find out what stories might be worth licensing, the company uses machine learning tool StoryDNA to “look at micro and macro trends emerging in stories on the platform,” while also paying attention to what content is being read, shared, and “engaged with by tens of millions of fans.” (The Verge)
