People are flocking to Telegram and Signal as privacy concerns over Big Tech companies grow. In the last week, “tens of millions” of users have reportedly downloaded Signal and Telegram—making them the “hottest” apps globally. Signal allows messages to be sent with “end-to-end encryption” and first became popular with young people during last year’s Black Lives Matter protests, while Telegram offers some encrypted messaging options, but is “largely popular for its group-based chat rooms where people can discuss a variety of subjects.” According to Apptopia, Telegram added more than 25 million users over the last few days pushing it to over 500 million users—and on Monday alone, they added nearly 1.3 million users. Their spike in popularity is directly related to “growing anxiety over some of the big tech companies” apps like Facebook-owned WhatsApp, which recently changed their privacy agreement.
