Streaming services are heavily investing in horror content. After years of being shunned by Hollywood, horror movies are finding year-round demand on streaming services. This year, horror-focused Blumhouse Productions created a series of films for Amazon Prime, which have “performed better than Amazon was anticipating.” Horror is seeing a major surge of popularity on streamers: The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor have been some of the most-watched shows on Netflix, while movies and shows like Hereditary, Midsommar, and American Horror Story have “found new life” on Prime Video and Netflix. Meanwhile, horror streaming platform Shudder reports their subscriber numbers and daily engagement have increased steadily throughout the pandemic, surpassing one million subscribers in September.
