Gen Z isn’t quite ready to rent clothes just yet. Young shoppers love using clothing resale shops like Depop, which saw a “triple-digital growth” between April and June compared to last year. However, clothing rental isn’t being adopted by Gen Z as quickly. A Mintel survey conducted in the U.K. found that 46% of 16-24-year-olds are not interested in clothing rental, while 34% have never rented, but were open to doing so, and only 20% reported ever renting clothing. YPulse’s shopping and fashion survey found that only 6% of 13-18-year-olds in the U.S. have rented clothing. The costs of subscription services is a likely turn off for younger customers, but services like Nuuly and Rent the Runway are attempting to attract Gen Z with discounted programs and “reserve” services.
