Trolls World Tour has made more in three weeks of digital release than the original did in five full months in theaters—and it’s causing industry shakeups. After Universal released their theatrical films digitally at the start of the outbreak, Trolls World Tour became the most downloaded film across all platforms for the entertainment giant. Now, the studio has announced that the movie actually made more than the original did in theaters, and they will continue to release select films digitally “without an exclusive theatrical run” even after theaters officially reopen. The news has caused some drama: AMC fired back that the plan is “categorically unacceptable” and they will no longer be showing Universal’s content in their theaters. (WSJ, Indiewire, NYTimes)
