Will summer camp still happen this year? COVID is impacting Gen Z’s important life milestones, and it could be threatening the “most treasured summer rite” of camps as well. The escapism provided by summer camps is “more urgent than ever,” and they also serve as child care for parents, seasonal employment for educators and young adults, and an economic boost for many rural and mountain communities. Some are already canceling summer sessions out of caution, but many camps are hoping to “proceed with extreme caution” and organizations like the YMCA and American Camp Association are preparing resources on how to make decisions.
