Many brands went meme-crazy and fully off the rails on social media this year. YPulse found that 69% of young social media users find it funny when brand accounts act like people and 2019 was certainly the year they delivered. Humanized personas have become the norm for brands on social media—complete with public feuds and inappropriate jokes. Many are seeing increase in business and profits as a result, but the race for engaging content means that some are stealing content from the young people they’re trying to win over, and backlash could be brewing.
