Graphic novels that tackle tough topics are trending among young readers. Comics and manga have increased in popularity (the latter can thank today’s Borderless Culture), but graphic novels are leading the charge—a genre distinguished by having a complete story, as opposed to serial installments. Thanks to the popularity of reads like “Guts,” which focuses on anxiety, U.S. and Canadian sales surged from about $400 million in 2014 to $640 million last year, according to ICv2 and Comichron.
