Comics and manga have increased in popularity (the latter can thank today’s Borderless Culture), but graphic novels are leading the charge—a genre distinguished by having a complete story, as opposed to serial installments. Thanks to the popularity of reads like “Guts,” which focuses on anxiety, U.S. and Canadian sales surged from about $400 million in 2014 to $640 million last year, according to ICv2 and Comichron.
