TikTokers stole the spotlight from YouTube celebrities at VidCon this year.Influencers with millions of followers on the short video platform walked the crowds and took selfies with fans—they were accessible, while YouTube stars were flanked by security. But YouTube need not worry. Instead of TikTok “dethrone[ing] YouTube,” TikTok celebrities will most likely earn their fans on the smaller platform and then storm YouTube (like the Viners before them), shaking up the online celebrity hierarchy.
