The vegetarian burger that bleeds is growing in popularity, but it’s also “under fire.” The Impossible Burger is in hot water for its not-so-natural main ingredient, a lab-made protein called soy leghemoglobin—which simply put, is a GMO. All-natural activists aren’t having it, asking whether the burger (which hasn’t been approved by the FDA) is even safe to eat. Fake meat sales are soaring with young consumers who want more vegan options, but are they willing to overlook their natural obsession for this highly-hyped burger?
