Social media is commonly blamed for teens’ upswing in anxiety—but is it all just “fear-mongering”? We’ve heard it time and again: correlation does not mean causation. And yet experts continue to say that social media use causes anxiety, and pediatricians are asking teens about their social media habits as part of assessing their mental health. Though many are seeking digital detoxes, some are saying there’s not enough evidence to directly blame social media for their anxiety—and that applies to medical professionals especially.
