Bots are the new holiday Grinches. Automated software is buying up the hottest toys of the season at “completely inhuman” speeds, up-charging hopeful shoppers “double, triple and quadruple their original price.” One trending toy for 2017, Fingerlings, is all but impossible to find, and shoppers “don’t blame bots, they blame the retailer.” Some politicians are pressuring retail associations to increase their security against the artificial scammers—which are also a major problem in online ticket sales.
