Blockbuster game Minecraft’s influence has been growing, and it could soon be in many U.S. classrooms. The game has been a hit with kids and is regarded as a “remarkably free-form digital learning environment.” Now, Microsoft has plans to release an education-specific edition for elementary schools, using Minecraft as a starting point for lessons in computing, history, math, and science. Lesson plans around specific topics will be available to provide inspiration for teachers. Previously, an initiative in Ireland created a version of the original game modified for educational purposes, and the Chicago Architecture Foundation developed summer camps around the game.
