Young Americans are increasingly anxious and depressed with no clear answer as to why.

Mar 15 2016

Young Americans are increasingly anxious and depressed with no clear answer as to why. Since the 1930’s the number of high school and college students reporting trouble sleeping and concentrating, dizzy spells, headaches, etc. has risen. Social psychologist, Dr. Jean Twenge, blames present-day life on deteriorating mental health: “modern life doesn’t give us as many opportunities to spend time with people and connect with them, at least in person…” She cites marriage delays, high divorce rates, and smaller families as factors that may bring on feelings of isolation. Although she recognizes the positive side of these societal advancements, she believes “modern life needs to do a better job of connecting people to one another.” (NYMag)
