Teachers today have to battle with the issue of distracting phones in class, and a new app wants to help solve their problems—while giving students and local businesses something to be happy about as well. Pocket Points rewards students for keeping their phones locked during class by providing them 1 point for every 20 minutes they’re off their phones. The points can be redeemed at participating stores and restaurants for menu items, for instance 25 points could be exchanged for a free bagel. So far, there are over 100 business partnerships include Pita Pit, Coldstone Creamery, and many pizza and bagel shops. Started by two college juniors just four months ago, Pocket Points is already in use at six colleges and five high schools, and has the potential to spread beyond classrooms into other areas where staying off phones is desired.
