For the past 49 years, the annual American Freshman study has been conducted by UCLA to track the shifting mindsets and trends among students. According to the survey, this year’s incoming class is more stressed out and less likely to party than college students before them. Nearly 12% of freshman reported that their mental health was worse than their peers, up from 7% a decade ago, and colleges are struggling to provide the emotional support that these students may need. Meanwhile, the time that they say they spend at parties each week, and the frequency that they drank during high school has dropped significantly. This does not necessarily mean they will continue to be “tame,” however, as it’s possible their inexperience could lead them to binge drink now that they are living away from home. (LA Times)
