In the past 10 years, Lego has done a complete 180, going from near-bankruptcy to becoming “nothing less than the Apple of toys.” Their adaptive innovation has kept them alive, and their Future Lab group, a team “charged with inventing entirely new, technologically enhanced ‘play experiences’ for kids all over the world,” continues to find ways to appeal to the next generation. Their research discovered that for these young consumers there is little distinction between physical and digital playing, driving Lego innovators to create toys that give kids hybrid digital-physical experiences.
