Nike+ is just one of the dozens and dozens of “Big Mother” apps that exist to track everything from steps a day to exposure to sunlight, and in the past few years self-tracking has “gone mainstream.” The next generation is being raised in the age of quantified self, when being nearly constantly monitored from birth is the norm. However, the key to these apps’ survival does not lie in the ability to capture as much or as specific data as possible, but in the devices’ ability to deliver what they advertise, make consumers happy, and give them meaningful information in return for their participation.
