Could summer jobs for teens help reduce youth violence? A recent study found that Chicago high school students enrolled in a job program were 43% less likely to be arrested for violent crimes than their peers without summer jobs. It could be that workplace learnings like self-control and decision making contribute to the difference, but another theory is that even a small amount of income helps to “[reduce] kids’ incentive to get involved in crime.” (NYMag)
