The pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong continue, and they have “given rise to a new political generation” as Millennials have made their voices heard and are “finding their political power.” They have also been yet another example of the importance of social media in modern day protest: student protestors in Hong Kong have turned to the app FireChat to communicate as their access to popular chat apps has been blocked. FireChat allows users to communicate via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, meaning no cellular service is needed, and the app has been downloaded an average of 100,000 times a day. (Time, Bloomberg)
