Ava DuVernay’s new show about a Black teen who discovers she has superpowers is the latest to join The CW’s Arrowverse. YPulse’s Representation in Action trend research found that 64% of 13-39-year-old Black consumers think it is important to see people of their race in lead roles, and we told you that young viewers want more superhero movies to feature BIPOC leads. This month, the cable network premiered DuVernay’s new teen superhero drama Naomi, starring Kaci Walfall, about a young Black girl who discovers her own super abilities following an unexpected event in her hometown of Port Oswego, Oregon. When her powers are unleashed, she alternates between the name of “Naomi” and the alias “Powerhouse.” The series is adapted from the character of Naomi McDuffie, who was first introduced by DC Comics in 2019—and is the latest to join the CW’s expanding Arrowverse, which includes the shows Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Black Lightning, Batwoman, and Superman & Lois.
