Higher education is attempting to avoid a “lost generation” of college students. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 63% of new high school graduates enrolled in college last fall, the lowest rate in 20 years. For those who started college last fall, online school became the norm, and only 59% of first-year students stayed for their second year—down 75% according to the Tennessee College Access and Success Network. To get 2020 graduates and high schoolers interested in pursuing higher education, institutions are forming advising programs made up of current students who are coaching potential students on how to navigate college life and how to fill out financial-aid forms. Some are even offering small scholarships to compensate for school-related expenses. (WSJ)
