Livestreams and relatable content help YouTube viewers feel connected. According to YouTube, 85% of its users have watched a livestream on the platform in the past 12 months, and “with me” videos—clips of people sharing their daily tasks like “clean with me” or “decorate with me”—garnered more than 2 billion global views. YPulse’s media consumption data shows that Gen Z and Millennials’ interest in livestreams increased during the pandemic, which was likely brought on by their desire for relatable, unfiltered content when the world felt unstable. YouTube also notes that when late night talk shows shifted to YouTube and gave viewers a glimpse into the hosts’ at-home lives, viewership increased, with views of The Daily Show channel rising 45% last year. Live content merged peoples’ public and private lives into one last year, and its accessibility and genuine engagement levels it fosters is here to stay.
