Walmart has acquired a virtual clothing try-on startup. First, the retailer started introducing high-end fashion brands and private labels into its apparel mix, then its #walmartjeans went viral on TikTok, and now Walmart has acquired the virtual clothing try-on startup, Zeekit, that will roll out AR fitting rooms to online shoppers. Now, shoppers on walmart.com can use Zeekit to (virtually) test outfits from multiple brands like Free People, Champion, and Sofia Jeans by Sofia Vergara, and can even send their virtual ‘fits to their friends. With high return rates becoming more of a problem for retailers in the age of ecommerce shopping, Zeekit’s virtual fitting room experience could be a way to decrease the amount of money and waste produced from clothing returns. YPulse predicted that AR try-ons could be one of the next tech-forward trends to change shopping, and with more retailers dabbling in AR and digital-first shopping experiences, the trend is picking up speed.
