Students are becoming traumatized by active-shooter drills. Gun violence and school shootings are one of the biggest problems Gen Z and Millennials say they face today, and many are growing up undergoing active-shooter drills at school, exercises where students pretend to hide from gunmen. A report by the AFT and NEA showed there was a 55% increase between 2005 and 2016 in lockdown procedures taking place in public schools, though evidence reveals that drills aren’t effective in preventing deaths and—as a result—are affecting young adults’ mental health.
