Young Brits are becoming more isolated viewers.

Young Brits are becoming more isolated viewers. Watching TV as a family is a norm in Europe, but one that’s fading with time. Adults in the U.K. spend nearly half (44%) of their reading, watching, and listening time alone, +10pts more than in 2015. Among 16-34-year-olds, consuming media solo is “up by more than a fifth from a decade ago,” and they now spend 46% of that time alone. This is undoubtably driven by the fact that smartphones account for far more viewing time than 10 years ago—naturally—and the content there is simply not communal the way TV is. (Well, for now!) As a result of this growing habit, media platforms struggle to get the number of eyes they used to. And while it also makes shared cultural moments less universally known, some streamers are still leaning back toward weekly releases to create more viewing connection. (The Telegraph)
