The Top Kinds of Video Games Tweens Like to Play

Tweens are playing games that give them room to roam, discover, and create their own experiences more than anything else…

  • Nearly all tweens play video games and their favorites are the ones with unlimited gameplay
  • They are drawn to open-world games like Minecraft and Roblox for the freedom of creativity
  • Tweens want to create worlds of their own and let their imaginations run wild, not just follow a set plot
Between options to game on console, mobile, or tablets, and genres from open-world building to classic competitive IPs, the ways tweens game are endless. And just like the gens before them, gaming is a huge part of tweens’ lives. YPulse’s Tweens: Gaming report (exclusive to our Tween subscribers) shows almost all tweens play video games or mobile games, and 94% play daily or weekly. YPulse’s Tweens: Hobbies, Sports, and Play report also calls out the importance of gaming in their lives, and found if they have a choice, video games are their top playtime pick. So, it’s important for brands to understand what tweens are actually playing and even more importantly, why, if they want to connect with this all-encompassing hobby. (Which they should want to.)  In YPulse’s Tweens: Gaming survey, we ask 8-12-year-old video game players themselves what kinds of games they play. Our data shows tweens are most drawn to the games where they have the freedom to explore and make their own choices:    What kinds of games do 8-12-year-olds play? Q. T305.
