Tween boys in the U.K. and Ireland are reading primary-level books. According to a new What Kids Are Reading report by Renaissance, during the 2024-2025 academic year, 11-14-year-old boys were hooked on the Diary of a Wimpy Kidseries, which is considered for 8-12-year-olds, with eight of their 10 most-read books coming from the series. Girls in the same age range reported a much wider range of authors and titles, including The Hunger Games, Heartstopper, and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, which are considered higher-level reading. The complexity pattern is part of a broader divide of reading habits about boys and girls, with research showing that among 14-16-year-olds, less than 10% of boys read during their free time compared to 18% of girls.
