Gen Z New Yorkers are spending their Sundays at church.

May 04 2026

Gen Z New Yorkers are spending their Sundays at church. Recent data from Barna Group shows that Gen Z attends church more often than Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers. And in New York City, that looks a lot like a new social hour. Churchgoers in their 20s are doing everything from meetups to grab pizza before service to Catholicized versions of the “hot girl walk” trend—where young women pray while strolling through Central Park. Because of Gen Z’s craving for community, many say churches are overflowing and conversions are rising. Even dating is changing for this group in the city: one recently-launched Catholic matchmaking app said New York is one of the platform’s quickest-growing locations. YPulse’s 2025 Religion and Beliefs report shows that for the majority of young people, religious community isn’t a large part of their life—but with modernized activities and “wholesome Sundays” going viral on TikTok, that could slowly change.
