AI is changing how teachers require students to write. According to a survey by RAND, the share of U.S. middle school, high school, and college students who said they regularly use AI for homework jumped from 48% to 62% between last May and December. One third of students specifically said they use AI to draft or edit their writing. YPulse data also shows that school is the top thing young people are using AI for, making classrooms a testing ground for how to balance human thinking with machine help. Because of it all, some teachers are returning to analog instruction methods to make sure students don’t develop an overreliance on the tools. Some now require students to write in-class essays using paper and pencil, while others have emphasized in-class activities like reading, writing, oral presentations, and debates. At the same time, educators are finding ways to embrace it by teaching students how to use AI to research sources for papers and get feedback on drafts, so they don’t get left behind in their future careers.
