Hollywood is finally catching up and betting on microdramas. YPulse has been reporting on the rise in popularity of clip media (which we predicted years ago), with our data showing the majority of teens and young adults are interested in watching shows or movies in short clips on social media. Viral Chinese microdramas proved the format works last year, racking up millions of TikTok followers for shows with one-minute episodes. Now, major studios are backing the trend: Fox and Disney are both investing in studios to make these series, and Second Rodeo (a former MrBeast Creative Director’s vertical-first company) just signed 70M-follower creator Hannah Stocking to star in a musical microdrama called Playback. With brands like P&G also launching microdrama series last year, vertical storytelling is getting the brand investment platforms like Quibi thought it deserved—just a few years late and on TikTok.
