Facebook is trying to make “poking” happen again.

Facebook is trying to make “poking” happen again. With new ads and more prominent features, Facebook is clearly trying to make the feature (which actually never went away) relevant for a new gen. Millennials will remember poking as a vague social tool that could be flirty or annoying. But Facebook is banking on it becoming something like a Snapchat or TikTok Streaks, especially by creating a page tracking their pokes. (If you don’t know, “streaks” number the days in a row users message each other without missing.) Part of the comeback is capitalizing on nostalgia for earlier iterations of social media that Gen Z views as less performative and more connecting, and Facebook already saw pokes used 13x more last year.
