The U.K. is seeing a rise in complaints over “ultra-thin” models in advertisements.

The U.K. is seeing a rise in complaints over “ultra-thin” models in advertisements. It’s no secret that diet-centric content is becoming mainstream again. The rising popularity of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs like Ozempic have aided this return of thinness back to the forefront of pop culture, too. Consumers in the U.K. have noticed this, with experts saying, “We’re on the cusp of seeing heroin chic return,” a phrase used in the early ‘90s when some models were “extremely thin, pale and had dark under eye circles reminiscent of drug use.” This year, the Advertising Standards Authority said it’s received multiple complaints a week over models who “appeared unhealthily thin,” and Zara, Next, and Marks & Spencer have all had ads banned in recent months over this complaint. Experts in the fashion world hope that the banned ads will serve as a reminder for brands to “maintain the diversity we have seen in models in recent years and not to regress back to outdated standards.” (BBC)
