College kids are scheduling their whole lives on Google Calendar. From classes and meals to five-minute walks and even dates, students across campuses are using Google Calendar—a.k.a “GCal”—to organize every moment of their day. For some, this level of planning offers relief from the chaos of college life, providing a clear plan for what’s next and taking away the need to remember every detail. But while the tool helps manage busy schedules and social lives, some young people argue that it squashes spontaneity. Others say it sometimes become a status symbol for how productive someone is—making packing their day another online social comparison tool. (WSJ)
