Facebook was not able to entice Snapchat with its $3 billion buyout offer, but they may have done better—acquire Masquerade. Masquerade’s app MSQRD, currently dominating the App store, uses imaging software to create fun and at times creepy face filters that you can record and send to friends (which is very similar to Snapchat’s popular feature “lenses”). Masquerade’s technology will be incorporated into Facebook, in an effort by the platform to cater to the younger generation with more “abilit[ies] to add filters, text, emojis and stickers to photos and videos.” The app itself, however, will continue to run independently.
