Minnesota is using its state surplus budget to put a record amount of funds into higher education. Like many other schools throughout the nation, the total undergraduate enrollment at Minnesota State four-year institutions decreased by nearly 10K students between 2018-2022. The extra funding is to cover the costs of keeping tuition rates steady at several public colleges and universities in the state, as well as supporting the North Star Promise Scholarship initiative. This program ensures that state residents with a household income under $80K receive assistance to cover tuition and fees at in-state public higher education institutions, after factoring in other forms of financial aid.
