Sports betting apps are ensnaring college students.

Dec 14 2023

Sports betting apps are ensnaring college students. The prevalence of mobile gambling, primarily through sports betting apps, has become a significant concern, drawing parallel to addictive behaviors like binge drinking or substance abuse. A meta-analysis from the University of Buffalo suggests about 10% of college students exhibit pathological gambling tendencies, a notably higher rate than the estimated 2-5% prevalence in the general U.S. population. YPulse’s Sports and Athletics Report shows more than one in five young consumers have used a sports betting app, with college students indeed the most likely to say so. Though a complete prohibition of online gambling could backfire by promoting an underground market, the societal harm from online sports betting looks to outweigh its benefits at the moment. (TIME)
