Gaming might be ByteDance’s Achilles heel. Despite just adding gaming elements to the app last year, TikTok’s parent company recently conducted a round of layoffs in their gaming department “Nuverse.” Since its conception in 2021, Nuverse has not seen any commercial success or significant breakthrough titles. With a staff of about 3K employees, there is still a lot of uncertainty about how much of the department will be scaled back. A ByteDance spokesperson cited the layoffs as a restructuring of their gaming business to “make adjustments to center on long-term strategic growth areas.” (TechCrunch)
