Amazon is being sued for “duping” customers into signing up for Prime. Last week, the Federal Trade Commision sued Amazon for manipulating customers into subscribing to Prime and then making it hard for them to cancel. The lawsuit claims that Amazon used “manipulative, coercive, or deceptive user-interface designs” to their advantage to increase the number of subscriptions. Ironically enough, Amazon also named their cancellation process “Iliad,” which refers to Homer’s writing on the notoriously tedious and difficult Trojan War. However, Amazon denies these claims, saying that they “make it clear and simple for customers to both sign up for or cancel their Prime membership.” According to YPulse’s Media Consumption report, nearly half (47%) of Gen Z and Millennials have an Amazon Prime subscription.
