The 2023 GLAAD report is showing that Twitter lacks a safe space for LGBTQ+ users. The organization recently named the social media platform the “most unsafe” for LGBTQ+ people, according to their latest Social Media Safety Index (SMSI). The measurement is based on factors including internal and explicit safety policies and in-house diversity, as well as 10 others. GLAAD is stressing the importance of this report because it is “the industry’s first standard for tackling online anti-LGBTQ hate and increasing safety for LGBTQ social media users.” While other social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok have improved their SMSI from the previous year’s report, Twitter is consistently “fail[ing] at enforcing the safeguarding of LGBTQ users.” YPulse’s Social Media Monitor report data shows that LGBTQ+ youth (46%) are more likely to be using Twitter than their non-LGBTQ+ peers (34%), making this report even more alarming.
