What’s getting young people offline? Apparently, metal detecting. We know that analogue activities have been the trend of the year. And as one metal-detecting Millennial puts it, these nostalgic activities “going back in time” help slow down from the constant feed of social media and rapidly developing AI content. It gets them spending time outside, paying attention to their surroundings, and engaging in history when they make a find. However, many of the hobbyists see rare, antique discoveries as just a bonus to being part of a community. The National Council for Metal Detecting—yes, just for this—says around 50K people are metal detecting, compared to some 20K five years ago. And while that’s certainly not all Gen Z and Millennials, the community is seeing an uptick in families and women partaking in what has historically been a male-dominated hobby. (BBC)
